11 Oct 24 hours in Glasgow – How much can you fit in?
You’ve planned an overnight at the Merchant City Inn, Glasgow, a flying visit to catch up with friends, or perhaps a quick city break. In any case you will be amazed at how much you can fit into 24 hours in Glasgow.
As you arrive and check-in at the Merchant City Inn, and get your bearings…you are right beside Glasgow’s Merchant city. An area of Glasgow that was thriving at and its peak in trade in the 19th century it is not only a place to shop, eat and socialise but there are some beautiful examples of architecture here to admire including St. Andrew’s, an 18th century A-listed former church. As you stroll towards the oldest part of the city, you may end up near Buchanan Street, a shopper’s paradise. In fact form here on in to the heart of Glasgow, it really IS all about shopping, especially around central station and Queen Street!
Now, it may be time to add a bit of culture to you day, after a stop for coffee and any number of hip independent or chain coffee shops scattered all over the city. First up we would suggest a visit to the Glasgow museum of Modern Art (GOMA, but keep your eyes peeled walking around, there are some gorgeous buildings to admire especially over many of the high street shop windows.
There’s no time to lose as you check out Glasgow’s West End, easy to get to by subway or taxi. Byres Road is a great place to visit with the Hunterian museum and the Mackintosh house nearby as well as the shops (yes more shops) and cafes to peruse at your leisure. If you are still looking to soak up some culture, you could do worse then head to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
As you approach the evening time, you simply cannot ignore the wonderful, characterful Glasgow pub culture. There is no doubt that many pub recommendations may come your way, and probably top of the list is the Horseshoe Bar, which hasn’t changed since 1888!
Where you choose to eat, drink and play when the sun goes down will provide the best end to a fun filled day in Glasgow.
